You Should Teach Composting to Your Kids

Do you want your kids to learn about composting and gardening? I think that it is a great idea for kids to learn these kinds of skills. More and more people should be growing their own food. In fact, I believe that more will be doing this in the years to come. With this in mind, teach composting to your kids. To get them started, have them help you out with your composting. Ask to help gather twigs, leaves and grass clippings.

When in the house teach them what is biodegradable and what can go into the compost. Ask them questions about what is biodegradable and what is not. Have them participate by throwing things into the compost pile. Pretty soon they will be telling you what can be composted and what cannot. Teaching composting to your kids should not be boring. Do not give them a book to read, kids need visuals to learn.

Show them exactly what you are doing and what it means. If you want, you can prepare a PowerPoint presentation to give them an overview of the entire process. Show them what the compost is used for when it is ready. Get them involved with the entire process. When you teach composting to your kids, it should be a fun experience. If it is fun for them then they will want to be involved and they will want to help out more often.

Show them the things that you cannot add to the compost, so they do not add these items when you are not looking. Items like meat and dairy products are not good for composting because they tend to rot and attract animals. Ask them questions and make sure you answer their questions. If they happen to add something that should not be added, then have patience and explain why it cannot be composted.

When you teach composting to your kids, you are teaching them about recycling as well. Composting is a way to recycle biodegradable items. If they do not seem interested, do not push them. Have them help whenever they can. At least they will still be learning to compost. When you teach composting to your kids and they begin to help you, it gives them confidence and makes them feel good about themselves.
