Should You Compost?

If you have a garden, then you should consider composting as well. Are you wondering what materials you could compost and which one you cannot compost? Most organic material can be put into your compost pile. If you are composting at home and are not running a large industrial operation then there are some limits as to what you can do.

You will want to keep the smell down, which means you may not be able to compost all your household biodegradable waste. One of the best things to get your composting started is your grass clippings. People do not realize that these clippings hold a lot of nitrogen, which is essential in a good compost program. Hay or straw works great as a great compost item too. Farmers that are involved in composting will often use hay.

If the hay is greener then it will contain more nitrogen. Should you compost or not, truly is up to you. If you think that you just would not have enough things to compost, then you are quite wrong indeed. Here are just some of the things that you can use to start your compost pile: tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit and vegetable remnants. As you can see, everyone has the necessary items to start a compost operation.

Do not include any dairy products or any meat products. These tend to rot and attract unwanted pests to your compost. Other things that you can include are paper products, sawdust and wood shavings. Anything that has been chemically treated should be avoided. Even sawdust from treated wood is not good because the chemicals can leak into the soil, which is obviously bad for your garden.

If you have plants that are diseased or died from a disease, these cannot be included either. Avoid adding weeds to your compost pile because you could end of passing the seeds onto your garden, and you do not need more weeds in your garden!

Now, considering what we asked in the beginning of this article, should you compost? The answer is yes if you have the room for composting then go ahead and do your part for the environment.
