Is Composting Worthwhile?

Anybody who spends time gardening, likely has heard of or even tried composting. Long time gardeners know how effective composting is for their garden. Although for many people, it is not at the top of their list of things to do. Many people feel that they just do not have the time for composting. They would rather purchase a bag of commercial grade compost. In reality, it does not take a lot of work to make compost.

It is simply the process of decomposing organic matter. This includes household wastes, plants, leaves and even some paper products. The decomposing material turns into a rich dark earthy substance, which is rich in minerals and therefore good for your garden. Many gardeners use compost to enrich the soil in their gardens. Compost improves the structure of the soil allowing the plants to prosper.

It is not difficult to compost and thus composting is worthwhile. It is quite easy to create compost in your backyard. Try to keep the entire composting confined to a relatively small area, this way you keep your yard neat and tidy. A smaller area is easier to maintain as well. It allows you to better regulate the air and temperature within your compost. The best materials for your compost are a good ratio of greens and browns.

The greens contain the nitrogen necessary for good compost. This includes grass clippings and kitchen scraps. The browns include dry leaves, straw and wood chips. What seems as the best possible ratio of browns to greens is three to one. If you have too much browns, it could take much longer for decomposition. If you have too much green then your compost could be quite smelly. Your composting will be worthwhile if you keep it properly aerated.

To help with the aeration, turn over the compost on a regular basis. Keep doing this until the entire process has completed. It takes little time and effort to get your compost up and running. However, for your compost to be worthwhile you cannot ignore it and you must add the proper ingredients.
