Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Compost?

Let's say you have been using the method of turning over your compost every few days. You have been diligently doing this for several months. In addition, you have done your best to keep away any insects. You have also kept it damp throughout the process. Well, now you want to begin using some of your compost on the garden. Is it a good time to use it? Well, are any of the original ingredients recognizable? If not, then you are ready to start using your compost. The finished product will look more like humus or soil.

Humus will look black or dark brown due to an abundance of organic matter. It will also smell quite earthy. Spread it out over the garden to help it dry a bit, which in turn will make it easier to use. If you do happen to find any pieces that are still too big, just throw them back into your compost pile. Composting is a great way to help the environment because it helps recycle organic matter. It also improves the overall soil quality of your garden because of the added nutrients.

Your garden will grow better with good compost added. Adding compost to the soil allows your garden to have better water retention, which is good for the growing process. More gardeners should consider using compost for their gardens. Adding the compost to the soil before you plant anything allows the compost to draw out the nutrients and minerals in the soil for your plants to absorb during the growing season. Compost can also be used as mulch.

You will need two to six inches of mulch, which will lessen the growth of weeds, help with water retention and even attract worms, which are good for the garden as well. One final use of compost is to use it as potting mix. Mix it with sand and soil and there you will have an excellent potting mix. As you can see, there are a number of good uses for compost. Hats off to everyone who helps recycle their organic matter into compost.
