Information on Starting a Home Composting Process

There are two main types of composting processes. There is the industrial composting process and a home based composting process. The home system is gaining in popularity due to the push to recycle as much as possible. The home based composting process is quite simple to implement if you are willing to do a bit of work to get it started. If composting at home then you will not need any large machinery.

Obviously, a large industrial composting process will require the large machinery. With a home based composting process it is quite easy to separate your green and brown ingredients to monitor the carbon and nitrogen ratio. It is not difficult to do. In fact, you can train your children to help in this process. Your home based composting process will either have a closed or open compost bin.

If you have a garden, then composting is something that could be very useful to you. It gives you the opportunity to use natural organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizers. An interesting method of a home based composting process is the German mound method. This method consists of digging a trench that is about five inches wide and one inch deep and filled with clippings from hedges and waste from wood-rich gardens.

In the center, a circle is dug and in this layer, there is placed leaves and other rough materials. This method allows for good soil in the next four or five years.

The last method we can discuss as far as a home based composting process is the Ecuador style. This involves digging a pit and placing banana stalks, then placing the green and brown ingredients in layers. Water is added to keep it moist and the pile is aerated as well. Ecuador has a much warmer climate and that can aid in the composting process.
