Don't be Afraid to Get Your Hands Dirty When Making Compost

If you like gardening, then making a compost pile should be no problem at all. You will certainly get your hands dirty when making compost. You can certainly use gloves if you would rather keep your hands as clean as possible. Composting is a dirty job. Making compost consists of combining biodegradable products such as household waste with air, water and nitrogen. Compost itself is a dark crumbly substance that is very much like soil.

It acts as a natural fertilizer for your garden, to help it grow well. Find a place to start your compost pile that is near your garden and preferably away from your house. Some people paint or conceal their compost bin to make the area look neater. You do not need to do this if you do not want to. Once you have the area setup, you can begin the process of composting. Follow a ratio of three to one in brown to green materials.

The green ingredients contain a lot of nitrogen and the brown ingredients contain a lot of carbon. Green ingredients include grass clippings and brown ingredients include wood products. Do not worry about the potential for the compost to smell bad. Making compost correctly does not emit a smell. If you have the proper ratios of brown and green products then you should not have to worry. Compost will not smell like rotting but it should have an earthy smell.

If your compost does smell funny, then perhaps your ratio is not right or maybe you added something that should not have been added. One way to make sure you are using the proper ratio is to add one pile of green materials and then add two piles of brown materials. Keep doing this until you have a good pile of compost. The ingredients will break down quicker with a larger pile. Some people add a pile of compost to their burgeoning new pile.

This can help start the process as well. It is also important to add some moisture to the pile of compost. Keeping the compost damp will also help with the breakdown of the compost. The pile of compost should feel something like a sponge. Making compost also means that you must turn it over at least once a week to keep it properly aerated. After a couple of months, you should have good compost forming.

Making compost is not too difficult and does not require too much time.
